War Poetry for Today Winner: How my childhood in war-torn Iran inspired me

Tuesday, 9 December 2014

Jasmine Heydari, our War Poetry for Today winner talks to Theatre Cloud about her inspiration behind the winning poem 'The First Time'.

"The response to the poem has been amazing, it has been so great as a writer to see that my poem is speaking to so many hearts - so again thank you guys for choosing it and for giving it a chance to reach a wider audience." says Jasmine.

Her favourite poets include:

"Maya Angelou, Pablo Neruda and Ahmad Shamlou (an Iranian poet)... because although their writing and style differs quite a lot from each other, their writing always makes me discover a new way of looking at life and understanding it."

You can watch Jasmine reading her winning poem 'The First Time' and the Regeneration cast reading the other shortlisted poems here.

Regeneration premiered on 2 September 2014 (previews from 29 August) at Royal & Derngate, Northampton, where it continues until 20 September 2014. It then tours to York, Edinburgh, Bradford, Nottingham, Cheltenham, Richmond, Wolverhampton, Darlington and Blackpool where it concludes on 29 November.
