In this in-depth education interview, director Stephen Unwin explains his approach to his Touring Consortium production of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge, and gives tips for how to become a theatre director. Terri Paddock asked the questions.

A View From the Bridge is one of the great plays of the 20th century. What it does is it goes right to the heart of the agony of a particular kind of experience where a man has too much love, too much passion and not enough money, education, ability to deal with it. It’s like a Greek tragedy.” – Stephen Unwin

We caught up with Stephen during rehearsals for A View From the Bridge. Other questions he answers, with great eloquence, include:

  • How did you become a director?
  • Does your experience as a theatre director qualify you to direct film and television?
  • How would you describe your career path?
  • What turned you on to theatre in the first place?
  • What advice would you give to aspiring directors?
  • What advice would you give on how to read plays?
  • What’s the most significant reason for doing A View From the Bridge now?
  • What’s the story in a nutshell?
  • What’s the significance of the play’s title?
  • How many times did you read the script before directing the cast?
  • How much research did you do?
  • What’s your approach to casting?
  • What’s your approach to rehearsals?
  • What do you think are the key moments in the play?

Stephen Unwin has had long stints as artistic director of English Touring Theatre company and the Rose Theatre, Kingston. He has directed over 50 plays, several of which transferred to London’s West End, and over a dozen operas. He has authored or co-authored numerous books including So You Want to be a Theatre Director?, The Well Read Play and A Pocket Guide to Twentieth-Century Drama.
