Sophie Ward becomes the first Brave New Worlder! Ward will play a character you may not be expecting...

Sophie WardSophie Ward will play Brave New World’s ‘Margaret Mond – the Regional World Controller for Western Europe’. Those that know the story will be familiar with the character but less so with the name – ‘Margaret’,  that’s because in Huxley’s novel, the character is male (as indeed are all ten of the World Controllers in the story) and is known by the name of Mustapha Mond.

Dawn King, who is adapting the story for the stage, feels it was important for the play to be more representative of the world today and in the future.

“I took this decision primarily because as a feminist, I wanted to increase the gender equality of the show. I also felt that having a female world controller of Western Europe is more representative of our world today, and of a world of the future.
Dawn King, adapter of Brave New World

Sophie has worked in film, television and theatre across the world, with her theatre work including Private Lives, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Semi Monde. Sophie previously modelled for Vogue and famously came out as a lesbian in 1996.

Dawn says Sophie is a great choice to play the role and will strengthen the qualities of the character.

"I think Sophie Ward is a great choice to play the role because ‘Mond’ is a person who has had to make hard decisions, has a strong sense of her own personal morality, and has real steely authority – qualities I think Sophie will accentuate.”

We’ll have all the latest on further casting as it happens in the next few weeks.

Brave New World premieres at Royal and Derngate, Northampton, where it runs from 4 to 26 September 2015. It then tours to Edinburgh, Blackpool, Nottingham, Cheltenham, Wolverhampton, Darlington and Bradford where it concludes on 5 December.
