2 September 2015

The Touring Consortium's co-producing partners on Brave New World are clearly as inspired as we are by the themes Aldous Huxley's novel. They have collaborated with science professionals to devise a series of talks that to get audiences thinking and questioning.

What is genetic engineering?

What is possible in today's society and what could be possible in the future?

From 11.30am on Saturday, at the arts complex's Errol Flynn Filmhouse, there will be showings of two futuristic films, which will be followed by related talks:

  • Gattaca (1997), starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman - In this biopunk vision of the future, society is ruled by eugenic. Children are conceived through genetic manipulation and anyone with less than perfect genes is doomed to the underclass.
  • Jurassic Park 3D - In Steven Spielberg's blockbuster, cloning has been accomplished by extracting the DNA of dinosaurs from mosquitoes using the DNA of frogs to complete the strands.

The films will be followed by talks on test-tube babies and genetic enhancements led by eugenics experts: Dr William Abberley, professor at Oxford University and winner of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Thinker, and Dr Merryn Ekberg of the University of Northampton.

During the day, there will also be a design and stage talk and tour of the Brave New World set. And after the 7.45pm evening performance of the play, Royal & Derngate artistic director James Dacre, who has also directed Brave New World, will chair a post-show discussion with the cast.

There are also Brave New World pre-show and interval activities.

And, double the fun: if you're an identical twin you can see the play on Saturday for only £10.
