Royal & Derngate and Northampton Museum and Art Gallery to host First World War family day.

As part of an extensive Heritage Lottery funded project commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, Royal & Derngate and Northampton Borough Council’s museum service host a free First World War Family Day on Saturday 30 August. Coinciding with the opening of wartime play Regeneration at the theatre and exhibition A Shoemaker Goes to War, the family day combines indoor and outdoor craft activities, stalls, exhibitions, music, art, dance and workshops, with the chance to discover more about the history and heritage of Northampton Borough during the Great War.

Taking place in and around Royal & Derngate, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Guildhall courtyard, the free Family Day runs from 11am till 4pm. Community stalls will be set up in and around the venues and there will be range of themed craft activities for all ages to join in with.

A Camera Obscura situated in the Guildhall Courtyard will have a range of optical toys and games from the period for people to enjoy, while a visual artist will be leading the creation of a collaborative piece of artwork in Underground 4, at Royal & Derngate. People have the opportunity to join in ballroom dance workshops at Underground 1 & 2, Royal & Derngate, (for which places can be booked in advance) and there will also be a chance to see a dance demonstration in the Guildhall courtyard.

The day will also see The Wicked Way Café at Royal & Derngate transformed in to an Edwardian tea party for people to enjoy traditional cakes and nibbles, and at a 1914 Fashion Boutique people can have their hair done in a 1914 style, for a small fee.

The First World War Family Day will culminate in a performance by the Royal and Derngate Community Choir, who will be performing songs from the era in the Guildhall courtyard.
