Darlington gets £1.5m for new kids theatre next door to the Civic Theatre

Huge congratulations to our consortium partner venue, Darlington Civic Theatre, and their local young people’s company, Theatre Hullabaloo, as their vision for a major new children’s theatre comes a major step closer to reality.

Theatre Hullabaloo has just been awarded £1.5million to build the new theatre, The Hullabaloon, which is due to open on a site adjacent to the Civic in autumn 2016. The new £2.15 million complex, which has also had £650,000 committed by Darlington Borough Council, will include a 150-seat studio theatre, family café, creative play spaces plus rehearsal and office space for the organisation.

The Hullaballoon, run in artistic and operational partnership with the Civic as well as Darlington Borough Council, will offer a programme of performances, play installations, creative curriculum delivery and family-focussed activities which will have an emphasis on opportunities for younger children. It will also act as a hub for key partnerships with regional universities interested in developing child-centred research in practice, as well as being available for use by local community groups.

Miranda Thain, Creative Producer of Theatre Hullabaloo, said: “The opportunity to build a child-centred theatre in Darlington is a dream come true, and as the only theatre of its kind in the North, the Hullabaloon will have a hugely positive impact for children and families based within the region for years to come. It will also make a significant contribution to children’s theatre nationally and internationally.
