Community casting: Edinburgh auditions for A View from the Bridge

Community casting: Edinburgh auditions for A View from the Bridge

Thursday, 2 October 2014

Who wants to be a dockworker extra in Touring Consortium's upcoming production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge? Hopefuls in Edinburgh include a Boots chemist, a language teacher, a props designer, a Weakest Link winner and a Commonwealth Gamesmaker.

Given that immigration is at the heart of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, the multinational nature of those auditioning to join the community cast in Edinburgh, where the Touring Consortium production will run from 28 April to 2 May 2015, seemed highly appropriate.

In addition to Scotland, auditionees who gathered at Edinburgh’s Kings’ Theatre on Monday night (29 September 2014), hailed from England, Wales and Ireland, as well as Poland, Portugal and even, like the Miller’s own characters, Italy.

The group of hopefuls also comprised a wide range of ages, from 16 to 61 years old, several community cast alumni from the Touring Consortium’s 2013 production of To Sir, With Love, and lots of fans of Arthur Miller. This major new production of A View from the Bridge tours next year as part of the international celebrations marking the centenary of Miller’s birth.

A View from the Bridge is a special play for me,” said auditionee Jennifer Watson, echoing the sentiments of many. “It's actually the first contemporary piece of drama I ever read as a student, and it's still one of my favourites.”

During the audition process, Neale Birch, A View from the Bridge’s staff director, put the would-be dockworkers and extras through their paces. Each had their moment on the Kings’ Theatre stage, acting out a spontaneous scenario.

The full community cast for Edinburgh will be announced in January and will appear alongside the production’s professional company of actors. In the coming weeks, Theatre Cloud will also be reporting on community auditions in Bradford (6 October), Nottingham (13 October), Cheltenham (20 October) and Darlington (10 November).
