Ambassador's day: Brave New World

Ambassador's day: Brave New World

Read what happened when theatre ambassadors from around the country saw Brave New World for the first time. Janice Taylor, who's responsible for keeping ambassadors in the know, â€‹writes about the day she's been waiting for.

Last Saturday, thirty theatre ambassadors from around the country gathered to see Touring Consortium Theatre Company’s latest Co-Production with Royal & Derngate Northampton, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, adapted by Dawn King.

The ambassadors spread the word about new shows, helping develop new audiences in their area. I work closely with them throughout the year and have been sharing our insights about Brave New World with them for months. Ambassador’s days are always a nerve-racking time, waiting to see what they think about the show – will they love it or hate it? It’s important for them to believe in it when talking about it to people in their communities.

I was a little apprehensive about them seeing the show for the first time, as it’s a particularly different production from the norm. This time, we were also welcoming five new ambassadors – So no pressure guys!

The day began with a backstage tour from Associate Producer Neale Birch. The ambassadors went onstage and learnt about the design process and how the set was constructed. Neale described the set as the peeling away of layers through the first half, which was an important part of Naomi Dawson’s design. He went on to explain the nature of touring theatre and the logistical challenges that are faced in having to transport the entire set around the country, ensuring it looks as good in every other venue as it does in Northampton!

Afterwards, it was time for the ambassadors to see the show… when the curtain came down at the end, I was eager to find out what they thought… and I was thrilled with their response! They were overwhelmingly positive and thought it would be easy to talk about, especially with younger audiences. The final highlight of the day was when all members of the cast met up with the ambassadors to answer any nagging questions! I hope everyone had a fantastic afternoon, especially our new ambassadors and I look forward to seeing you all again soon when I come to see you at your venues in the near future.
