We searched high and low - here are five of the best Dickens facts.

Over 140 years have passed since Dickens's death and his stories remain as relevant as ever. We've chosen five of our favourite facts we think help influenced his work and place in history as the greatest novelists of the Victorian Era.


Dickens was a voice to the poor. Aged 12, Dickens' father was sent to prison. Dickens was forced to leave school and work in a boot polish factory. Dickens wrote 15 novels and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. He loved theatre. Upon his death, a little girl is reported to have asked whether Father Christmas would die too.


A Tale of Two Cities opens at Royal & Derngate, Northampton, where it plays from 10 to 17 September 2016. It then tours to Oxford Playhouse, Richmond Theatre, Bradford Alhambra, Blackpool Grand, Wolverhampton Grand, Brighton Theatre Royal, Edinburgh King's, Cheltenham Everyman and Nottingham Theatre Royal.
